Description
"Tre Ulo" by Silvia Hametaj
This painting was inspired by the haunting Albanian polyphonic song Dil moj bejko në bedenë, a traditional lament from the southern region of Labëria.
Tre Ulo Three Doves portrays the sorrowful story of a mother mourning the loss of her three daughters, who chose to leap from the castle walls to preserve their dignity rather than fall into the hands of the approaching Ottoman army.
In her grief, the mother envisions the lives they could have lived, filled with light, love, and future dreams. I painted these three daughters as ethereal figures suspended between tragedy and transcendence, caught in the space where memory meets sacrifice.
This work is both a tribute to female resistance and a visual elegy of ancestral strength. Through layers of oil, symbolic forms, and muted tones, I aim to echo the timeless harmony of polyphony and the emotional weight of a mother’s loss.
